|Finale of Stihovizija in Smederevo|
The final evening of Stihovizija, competition at reciting poetry in foreign languages, was held in the Public Library of Smederevo, on December 2nd. Marta Slijepčević, student of the I/5 grade of Smederevo Grammar School, who has recited the poem “Королевская охота“ by Наталия О’шей (Natalia O’Shea: Royal Hunt), in Russian, won the First Prize.
Stihovizija is competition at reciting poetry in foreign languages organized by the Public Library of Smederevo (Serbia) for high school students in the region. The Smederevo Library is one of the few public libraries in Serbia having in their system the Foreign Book Department with rich and well structured holdings and large number of regular users, mostly primary school pupils and high school and college students. Bearing in mind their affinity for new technologies and electronic media, librarians of the PLS considered organizing new program that should be attractive for demanding teenage population a professional challenge. Therefore we were even more satisfied with great response of participants and their serious approach to the competition.
The library placed all its resources at contestants’ disposal to be used during the preparation for performance. For some of the students participation in this program was reason to become users of our library services for the first time.
Seven high schools took part in this year’s competition. They signed up 87 contestants to perform in 6 foreign languages (34 in English, 29 in French, 13 in Russian, 5 in German, 3 in Spanish and 3 in Italian).
Members of the jury were MSc Tatjana Lazarević-Milošević, professor of Serbian literature and language, chairman of Administrative Board of the PLS, Phd Dobrivoje Stanojević, professor of stylistics and rhetoric at Faculty of Political Science of Belgrade University, Biljana Živanović, professor of oriental philology and head of the Foreign Book Department of the PLS, Jelena Jeremić, professor of Serbian literature and language and head of the Homeland Department of the PLS, Marina Lazović, professor of Russian language and head of the Acquisitions and Processing Department of the PLS, Saša Arsić, professor of French language and literature and Nemanja Brković, Public Affairs director at U. S. Steel Serbia, company that sponsored the competition.
All finalists and their professors of foreign languages who helped them to prepare for the contest were rewarded with annual library membership cards for 2011. The three best contestants won diplomas and valuable gifts provided by the company U. S. Steel Serbia.
